What language your clone answers in

It matches your visitor by default, and that is usually what you want.

Yes, and it does by default. Response Language sits on the Personality step, set to Auto-detect.

The Response Language dropdown open, showing a search box and a Popular group listing Auto-detect marked Match visitor language and ticked, then English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese, each with its native name
Auto-detect sits at the top and is ticked by default. Search to find any other language.

Somebody writing to your clone in Portuguese gets an answer in Portuguese, even if everything you taught it is in English. You do not have to do anything to enable it.

    Choosing a specific language instead

Open the dropdown and you get a search box and a Popular group: English, Spanish, French, German and Portuguese, each labelled with its own name. Type in the box to find anything not in that list.

Picking one pins every answer to that language regardless of what the visitor writes.

    Why leave it on auto-detect

A meaningful share of the people who find a clone are not writing in English. Forcing one language turns those visitors away at the first message for no benefit.

When to pin a language instead

    • You work in one country and want to filter out enquiries you cannot serve
    • Your material contains terms that translate badly and cause confusion
    • You are legally required to communicate in a particular language

    Translating the interface as well

Pin a language and a second option appears: Translate the chat interface too. With it on, the labels your visitors see, "Type your message", "Enter your email", error messages, appear in that language instead of English.

Response Language set to Spanish, with a Translate the chat interface too toggle switched on and a note that visitor-facing labels will appear in that language instead of English
The toggle only appears once you pin a specific language.

Worth switching on if you pinned a language. A Spanish answer sitting under an English "Type your message" box looks unfinished.

The live preview panel showing the clone status as En linea rather than Online, confirming the interface translation is applied
The live preview shows it applied: "En línea" rather than "Online".

Check the live preview on the right after switching it on. It updates immediately, so you can confirm the labels changed without leaving the page.

    What it does not do

It translates the answer, not your knowledge. Your clone still reasons from material in whatever language you wrote it, so nuance in your own phrasing may soften in translation. Your tone of voice field is worth keeping simple and direct for that reason.

If you serve one audience in another language, add a few Q&A sources written in that language. Answers built from material in the reader's own language land better than translated ones.
