What Makes a Lead Magnet Work
An email address is the price of entry. A conversation is the goal.
Most coaching lead magnets fail quietly. They get downloaded, sit unopened in a downloads folder, and the welcome email that follows goes unread. The format is rarely the problem. The problem is that the resource was not tied to a specific person with a specific problem, or it did not lead anywhere.
Specific. It solves one problem the reader already knows they have, named in their words. "Stop dreading Sunday nights" beats "Find your purpose".
Quick. It delivers a small win in under fifteen minutes. The win is what earns the next email being opened.
Yours. It shows your method, not generic advice. The reader should finish it knowing how you think, which is what they are really deciding whether to buy.
Incomplete on purpose. It solves the first step, not the whole problem. The natural next question should be one you answer on a call.
The test
If someone finishes it and does not want to talk to you, it is a gift, not a lead magnet.
15 Lead Magnet Ideas for Coaches
Ordered roughly from most to least useful for a typical one to one coaching practice.
01Scorecard or self assessment. Ten questions that score the reader on the problem you solve. The result tells them something about themselves, and tells you who to follow up with first.
02One page checklist. The steps you walk every client through, in order. Quick to make and quick to use. Works best when it is narrow: "first 30 days as a new manager", not "leadership".
03Five day email course. One short lesson a day on one problem. It keeps you in their inbox for a week, which is the point.
04Workbook or worksheet. The exercise you use in session one, written up so people can do it alone. Shows your method rather than describing it.
05Template or script. A salary negotiation email, a weekly review page, a difficult conversation script. Something they will use this week.
06Short video training. Twenty minutes, one idea, one demonstration. Faces build trust faster than PDFs.
07Live workshop. An hour on one problem with time for questions. More work to run, and the people who attend live are often ready for a call.
08Challenge. Five or seven days of small actions with a daily prompt. Good for habits, fitness and confidence niches where doing beats reading.
09Case study breakdown. How one client went from stuck to sorted, step by step, with their permission. It is a lead magnet and social proof at once.
10Calculator. What their current situation is costing them: hours lost, money left on the table, sleep debt. Numbers make a vague problem concrete.
11Resource list. The books, tools and apps you actually recommend, with one line on why. Low effort, and useful if your audience is early.
12Audit or teardown. A short written review of their CV, LinkedIn profile, sales page or meal plan. High value, limited spots, and every one is a natural lead in to a call.
13Sample session. A recording (with permission) or a written transcript of a real coaching conversation. Shows exactly what working with you feels like.
14Swipe file. Real examples of good work in your field: emails, posts, pitches, plans. Useful for business and marketing coaches.
15Interactive AI clone. A chat assistant trained on your content that answers the reader's own question in your words. Covered in detail below.
If you are unsure, start with a scorecard or a checklist. Both can be built in an afternoon, both are specific by nature, and a scorecard result gives you a ready made opening line for a follow up email.
Lead Magnet Examples by Coaching Niche
Each example names the lead magnet and the offer it should lead into.
| Niche | Lead magnet | Leads into |
|---|---|---|
| Life coach | Life balance scorecard across eight areas, with a one line action for the lowest score | Call to talk through the result |
| Career coach | Salary negotiation email templates for three common situations | CV or interview prep package |
| Executive coach | First 90 days checklist for newly promoted leaders | Discovery call, often company funded |
| Business coach | Pricing calculator: what your current rate really pays per hour worked | Pricing strategy session |
| Health and fitness coach | Seven day habit challenge with a daily email prompt | Twelve week programme |
| Relationship coach | Difficult conversation script and worksheet | Couples or individual call |
| Confidence coach | Short video training plus a speaking anxiety self assessment | Group programme or one to one |
Notice that none of these is "my ebook about mindset". Each one names a moment (a negotiation, a promotion, a hard conversation) rather than a topic. Moments create urgency; topics create bookmarks.
Three Lead Magnet Templates to Copy
Structures you can fill in with your own method this week.
The scorecard
Title: "How [ready / stuck / balanced] are you? The 10 question [problem] scorecard."
Questions: Ten statements scored 1 to 5, grouped into two or three areas that map to how you actually coach. Example: "I know what I want my next role to be" (1 = not at all, 5 = exactly).
Result: Three bands (0 to 20, 21 to 35, 36 to 50), each with a plain description, the single most useful next step, and an invitation to book a call to go through their answers.
The five day email course
Day 1: Name the problem and why the usual fix fails. Day 2: Your first principle, with one exercise. Day 3: A client story (with permission) showing the principle working. Day 4: The most common mistake and how to avoid it.
Day 5: What changes when someone has support doing this, what working with you looks like, and your booking link. One clear ask, no countdown timers.
The checklist
Title: "The [moment] checklist: [number] things to do before / in your first [time period]." Example: "The first 30 days checklist for new managers."
Body: Eight to twelve items, each a verb plus one line on why. Group them by week or phase. End with: "Stuck on one of these? That is what I help with," and your booking link.
The AI Lead Magnet
A free taster of you that answers the reader's own question. Useful for some coaches, not all.
Every format above is one way: you write, they read. An AI clone trained on your own videos, posts and frameworks turns the lead magnet into a conversation. Instead of downloading your checklist, a visitor types their actual situation and gets an answer in your words, using your method, at 9pm on a Sunday when you are not working.
It suits you if
- You already have a body of content to train it on: videos, posts, a course, a book
- Your audience asks you the same questions in comments and messages
- Most interest arrives outside your working hours
- Your method can be explained in text, not only demonstrated
Start with a PDF if
- You are new and have little written or recorded material yet
- Your coaching depends on physical demonstration or live observation
- You are not yet sure who your client is (a clone cannot fix a vague niche)
- You have no follow up email or booking page for it to lead into
Two honest caveats. First, it is a taster, not a replacement for you: it should answer the first questions and point people to a call, not try to coach them through the whole problem. Second, there is no independent data yet showing that AI lead magnets convert better than a good checklist. Run it alongside your existing lead magnet and compare what each produces.
A Personify clone answers in text. You can build one and share it on the free tier; capturing leads and passing them to your email tool needs Pro, at $39 a month or $29 a month billed annually.

Log every conversation
Kit. Add each new lead to a sequence, such as the five day course above, so the follow up starts immediately.
Mailchimp. Add each new lead to an audience and let your welcome automation take it from there.
Kajabi. Grant each new lead access to a free offer, such as a mini course, so they land inside the platform you sell from.
Calendly. Create a one off booking link for each new lead, then send it with a follow up email step in the same workflow.
Teachable and Thinkific. Enroll each new lead in a free course.
Google Sheets. Keep a simple lead list or conversation log if you have no email tool yet.
Full field lists and limits are on the Zapier integration page, and platform specific guides cover Kajabi, Teachable and Thinkific.
The Follow Up Matters More
Whatever the format, the lead magnet is only the first message.
A lead who downloads your checklist on Tuesday and hears nothing until your monthly newsletter has forgotten you by then. Send the resource instantly, then a short sequence over the next week: one useful idea per email, one story, and one clear invitation to a call. Reply personally to anyone who answers.
When they book, the call is where the sale happens. Our discovery call questions for coaches include a script and checklist for exactly that conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a lead magnet for coaches?+
A free resource a coach offers in exchange for an email address, such as a checklist, scorecard, short email course, workshop or interactive tool. Its job is to give a quick win on one specific problem, show how the coach thinks, and make a discovery call the natural next step.
What is the best lead magnet for a coach?+
The one that solves a narrow problem your ideal client already knows they have, in under fifteen minutes, and leads directly to your offer. For many coaches that is a self assessment or scorecard, because the result is personal and gives you a reason to follow up. There is no single best format; a specific checklist beats a vague ebook every time.
How long should a coaching lead magnet be?+
Short enough to finish in one sitting. A one page checklist, a ten question scorecard or a twenty minute video is usually enough. Long ebooks feel generous but are rarely finished, and a resource nobody finishes does not lead to a call.
Can an AI chatbot be a lead magnet?+
Yes, if it is trained on your own material and answers the visitor's own question rather than giving generic advice. An AI clone of you works as an interactive lead magnet: people try your thinking on their situation, leave their email, and can be sent on to your email list or booking page. It suits coaches with a body of content to train it on. There is no public evidence yet that it converts better than a PDF, so test it alongside one.
Where do I deliver a lead magnet?+
Through your email tool. Kit, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign and similar tools can send the resource automatically when someone joins a form or sequence, and the same sequence carries your follow-up. If you sell through Kajabi, Teachable or Thinkific, a free offer or free course on the same platform works well because the lead is already inside the place you will sell to them.
