The Coach Prompt
Rules first, role second. The rules are what make it coach.
Fill in the two bracketed lines and paste the rest as it is. It works for any kind of coaching, and the prompts further down are shorter versions aimed at one area each.
Paste this into ChatGPT
You are my coach for this conversation. Coach me, do not advise me. How to respond: - Ask one question at a time, then stop and wait for my answer. - Work through four stages in order: my Goal, the Reality right now, my Options, and what I Will do. Tell me when we move to the next stage. - Reflect back what I said, in my words, before your next question. - Do not give me answers I could reach myself. If I ask for advice, first ask what I think. - If I am vague, ask for a number, a date or an example. - Keep replies under 100 words. - You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop. What I want to work on: [one or two sentences]. By the end I want: [what a good outcome of this conversation looks like]. Start by asking me what success looks like.
Are you a coach writing this for your clients?
A shared prompt gives them a generic coach. Personify trains a clone on your own frameworks, so clients get your approach between sessions.
Start FreeWhy It Works
ChatGPT is built to answer. Coaching is mostly asking.
Ask ChatGPT to be your coach with no other instruction and it does what it is optimised to do: solve the problem in one complete reply. The rules in the prompt switch that off.
ChatGPT by default
With the coach prompt
Answers the whole problem in one reply
Asks one question, then waits
Lists five options for you to pick from
Asks what options you can already see
Agrees with the plan you came in with
Asks what would make the plan fail
Ends with general encouragement
Ends with one action and a date
The structure comes from the GROW model, one of the most widely taught coaching frameworks. It keeps the conversation moving forward and makes it end with something you will do, rather than something you realised.
G
Goal
What do you want, and how will you know you got it?
R
Reality
Where are you now, and what have you already tried?
O
Options
What could you do? What else?
W
Will
What will you do, and by when?
Prompts by Type of Coach
Same rules as the prompt above, aimed at one kind of coaching each. Copy, then answer honestly.
Life coach prompt
You know something needs to change but not what.
Copy this prompt
Act as my life coach. Ask me one question at a time. First ask me to rate, from 1 to 10, how satisfied I am with work, health, relationships, money, and free time. Then ask which score I most want to raise by one point in the next month, and coach me through what that one point would take. No advice until I have answered at least five questions. You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop.
Business coach prompt
You run a business and feel busy without moving forward.
Copy this prompt
Act as my business coach. Ask me one question at a time about my revenue, my best and worst clients, and where my hours went last week. Then help me find the one constraint that, if fixed, would matter most this quarter. Push back if my answer is vague or flattering. Finish with one action I can take in the next seven days. You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop.
Fitness coach and personal trainer prompt
You want a plan you will actually follow.
Copy this prompt
Act as my fitness coach. Before suggesting anything, ask me one question at a time about my goal, my current activity, any injuries, the equipment I have, and how many days a week I can really train. Then build a four-week plan that fits those answers, and ask me which session I am most likely to skip and why. You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop.
Career coach prompt
You are deciding whether to stay, move, or change direction.
Copy this prompt
Act as my career coach. Ask me one question at a time: what I enjoy in my current role, what drains me, what I have been praised for, and what I would do if pay were equal. Then reflect back the pattern you see and ask me to name two roles worth testing. Help me plan one small test for each, such as a conversation or a side project. You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop.
Dating coach prompt
You keep ending up in the same place.
Copy this prompt
Act as my dating coach. Ask me one question at a time about the last three people I dated: how we met, what drew me in, and how it ended. Then point out anything those three had in common, without judging, and ask me what I want to do differently next time. Keep every reply under 80 words. You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop.
Running coach prompt
You have a race or a distance in mind.
Copy this prompt
Act as my running coach. Ask me one question at a time about my target distance and date, my current weekly distance, my longest recent run, and any pain or injury. Then write a weekly plan that builds gradually, and ask me each week how the plan went before changing it. You are not a therapist, doctor or financial adviser. If something I say needs one, tell me so and stop.
Looking for something closer to therapy than coaching? Those need different rules, covered in ChatGPT therapist prompts.
What People Search For
Small numbers each, which says something.
Monthly searches for each coaching prompt are modest. Most people who want coaching still look for a person, or ask ChatGPT directly without searching for a prompt first.

What a Prompt Cannot Do
A good prompt fixes how ChatGPT talks. It does not fix these.
Hold you accountable. It will never notice that you did not do what you said, because it will never ask. Next week starts from zero unless you start it.
Remember you. Each conversation starts blank unless you paste your history back in. A coach remembers what you said three months ago and notices when you say it again.
Disagree on its own. It is tuned to be agreeable. It will challenge you only when the prompt tells it to, and only as hard as the prompt says.
Know a method. It coaches with a generic structure. A good coach brings a specific method built from years of clients, and that is most of what you are paying for.
The honest summary
A good prompt gets you a structured conversation. It does not get you a coach who knows you.
If You Are the Coach
The version of this question coaches ask.
Plenty of coaches test prompts like these to see whether ChatGPT could cover the questions clients ask between sessions. It can cover the generic version. What it cannot do is answer with your frameworks, your examples and your programme, because it has never seen them.
That is what Personify is for. You train a clone on your own material, and clients talk to it on your site or a share link, in 100+ languages. The repeated questions get your answer, and your hours go to the work that needs you. We compared the two approaches in ChatGPT vs an AI coaching platform.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good ChatGPT coach prompt?+
One that sets rules for how it responds, not just a job title. Tell it to ask one question at a time, to work through your goal, your current reality, your options and your next step in that order, to reflect your words back, and to withhold advice until you have answered. Without those rules ChatGPT answers the whole problem in its first reply, which is the opposite of coaching.
Can ChatGPT be your life coach?+
It can run a useful structured conversation if you prompt it well, and it is available at any hour. It cannot hold you accountable between conversations, it does not remember you unless you paste your history back in, and it tends to agree with you. Treat it as a thinking partner for one session at a time, not as a coach who knows you.
What is the GROW model?+
GROW is a widely used coaching structure: Goal, Reality, Options, Will. The coach helps you define what you want, look honestly at where you are now, generate options, and commit to a specific next step. It is popular because it is simple and it ends with an action rather than an insight.
How do I make ChatGPT push back on me?+
Ask for it explicitly. Add a line such as "push back if my answer is vague or flattering" or "find the three weakest points in my plan". ChatGPT is tuned to be agreeable, so it will not challenge you unless the prompt tells it to.
Do these prompts work in Claude and Gemini?+
Yes. They are plain instructions, not ChatGPT features, so they work in Claude, Gemini and other assistants. Paste the prompt as your first message and fill in the bracketed lines.
A prompt is generic. Your method is not.
Coaches use Personify to train an AI clone on their own frameworks, so the questions that repeat are answered in their approach and the hours go to the work that needs a human.
